Nerone Tiranno incompreso

Nero, a Misunderstood Tyrant is a short video clip made in 2020 as a final end-of-course project. Due to the restrictions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the course’s concluding work was transformed into a series of individual clips, in which each participant performed a character or monologue.

The clip is based on a text by Jacopo Benni, who offers an ironic and provocative reinterpretation of Nero, one of the most controversial emperors in Roman history. In the monologue, the character takes the floor to defend himself against the accusations and judgments of history, offering an alternative version of events and questioning the traditional image of the cruel tyrant.

Through direct and contemporary theatrical language, the text plays with paradox and irony, turning Nero into a figure oscillating between self-justification, sarcasm and historical reflection, inviting the audience to question how myths and narratives that shape the memory of the past are created.
